Pleurocystidia are modified sterile elements on the face of lamellae, intermixed with basidia and basidioles (immature basidia). Mature basidia can be distinguished by the apical sterigmata (and some have developing spores attached). Pleurocystidia differ from basidioles (which are narrowly to broadly clavate) in size and/or shape, and sometimes also in wall thickness or pigmentation.

Pleurocystidia can be viewed on intact lamellae placed face downwards (where they are seen in top view), or on cross sections of lamellae (where they project outwards from lamellar face). Squash preparations can facilitate examination of shape and other features.

Check for pleurocystidia away from the edge of the lamella, because cheilocystidia may occur at and just near to the edge.
