Caulocystidia are modified sterile elements on the surface of the stipe. They differ from the ends of normal hyphae in size and shape, and sometimes also in wall thickness or pigmentation.
Caulocystidia can be viewed on a peel or thin scalp section of the stipe surface. Caulocystidia may be more common towards the stipe apex. Where there are remains of the partial veil (such as an annulus or ring zone), examine the stipe surface for caulocystidia above the veil remnants.
Choose this state if: there are caulocystidia present on the stipe surface.
