Three identification units in Panellus are keyed out separately. The genus is in need of revision, and each of the identification units is likely to represent a separate genus.

• Panellus ligulatus has a dry pileus, non-amyloid spores and gloeosphex cystidia.

• Panellus longinquus has a glutinous, pink pileus and amyloid spores.

• Panellus stipticus is the type of the genus. It has amyloid spores.
