images/Leucoagaricus_(other)/GL_VD7031_Leucoagaricus_rubrotinctus_HopetounF_4-08.JPG
Small to large agaric, growing on the ground, with a white or cream to yellow spore print. Pileus brown, red or pink, rarely white or grey, not viscid, not plicate (or only obscurely), often staining red on bruising. Lamellae remote or free. Stipe central. Partial veil remnants a membranous annulus, rarely a ring zone. Spores hyaline, dextrinoid, smooth; germ pore absent or narrow. Cheilocystidia present. Lamellar trama regular. Pileipellis a trichoderm, rarely a cutis. Clamp connections absent.
Leucoagaricus is close to
Leucocoprinus, which differs in the plicate margin to the pileus and the absence of red staining.
Lepiota is distinguished by the presence of clamp connections.
Agaricus is similar in stature but has dark lamellae at maturity and a dark brown spore print. The
Leucoagaricus leucothites group is keyed out separately due to the rather smooth pileus, which is typically white or pale brown.
Six species:
Leucoagaricus aff.
badhamii,
L. barssii (=
L. macrorrhizus),
L. meleagris and
L. rubrotinctus. Two species currently placed in
Lepiota also belong here:
Lepiota haemorrhagica and
L. discolorata.
The Leucoagaricus leucothites group is keyed out separately because of the rather smooth pileus.
